Community service lies at the heart of our mission and values. We believe in giving back to the communities that support us and fostering a culture of empathy and action. This commitment is exemplified by our Principal Data Governance Technology Advisor, Alison Knight, who recently dedicated a day to volunteering at the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, an organization she has been passionately involved with for quite some time.
About Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry
The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry is a vital community resource dedicated to alleviating food insecurity in Blacksburg and McCoy, VA. Serving qualified residents, the pantry operates as a joint ministry supported by over twenty-five faith-based communities in the area. In addition to these faith communities, the pantry receives support from various individuals, organizations, and local clubs, reflecting a broad base of community involvement.
The pantry’s mission is to provide nutritious food to those in need, promoting a sense of dignity and respect among its clients. By offering a wide range of grocery items, the pantry ensures that families and individuals have access to essential food supplies, which is crucial for their overall well-being.
The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry not only addresses immediate hunger needs but also fosters a spirit of collaboration and mutual support within the community. Volunteers and donors alike play a critical role in sustaining the pantry’s operations, making it a true communal effort to fight hunger and support those in need.
Alison’s History with Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry
Alison has been a dedicated volunteer at the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, contributing her time twice a month as part of the “Tuesday Service Team.” Through her consistent efforts, she has built strong connections with the pantry’s regular patrons and fellow volunteers, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
On a typical Tuesday service day, Alison arrives early to help set up the pantry. The afternoon begins with stocking shelves and sorting through the donations received throughout the week. This preparatory work ensures that the pantry is ready to welcome the influx of shoppers.
As the doors open to shoppers, Alison, along with her fellow volunteers, assists shoppers in selecting their groceries. She helps bag the items and carries the bags to their cars. This personal touch not only provides practical assistance but also offers a moment of connection and compassion to members of her community. The pantry usually serves 80-100 people during this hour and a half, making the volunteers’ efforts crucial for smooth operations.
